I've always loved icicles on roof lines. Hello they look magical, do they not!?!? ;) Well when I discovered we had some on our roof, I had a sneaking suspicion the prettiness was not the end of their story since it appeared that our gutter was overflowing with ice. So I decided to look up roof line icicles on "doctor" internet and discovered they are the result of ice dams. And ice dams can cause major roof damage not to mention insulation, sheet rock and other damage if and when the trapped water penetrates the roofing membrane. Lovely little ice dams are usually caused by poor insulation or an air leak in the attic and/or the roof line and sunlight pattern distribution. We are still not sure what is causing ours but Jon removed it after a few hours on the roof, we have decided to invest in some roof line heaters and keep looking into it. Wish us luck this winter! We are going to need it!!! :)
